Description: Received letter of January 13 and February 9. Thanks Boas for the gifts to his family, especially the eyeglasses. Would also like some writing tablets and envelopes and pencil lead. Trying to "correct the stories in the Book which you told me to do and I find lots of mistakes in it. For I see that I got to go all through the book to do it rightly. Some times I got to write some other story that belong to it to explain the meaning of it." Hopes that the result of Boas's meeting with the governor will be positive for Indians. Has not seen AwaxlagElas since Boas's visit, after which AwaxlagElas broke his hip. People there glad that Boas kept his promise. Glad that Boas saw Mrs. Cook, though her Kwagu'ł is "short." Sending pages 4834-4897. Has not found out who started the q!ap!ekw in ts!ets!ega and how the walasaxaakw dances disappeared. Is waiting for Charles Wilson's walasaxaakw to begin so he can write down the words of the songs. Will continue trying to correct stories from book.

Will try to correct the place names on the map and translate them, though it will be difficult as many Indians themselves do not know the meaning of some of them. AwaxElagelis is well but has to stay at home most of the time. The Governor never wrote to the people as promised. "I was told that a Bishop came and stay in Alert Bay and spoke to the Indian and ask them what they want the Potlatch for and he told them the same thing as you say about the Big Debts, and he had Mrs. Cook for his Interpreter."

Description: Received letter of October 29. Sorry to hear of health problems but hoping he has recovered. "It was just one of these attacks of weakness which we old people are exposed to every now and then." Sends thanks for sending the maps with names written in, though some of the handwritten words were hard to make out so is enclosing a typewritten list of those that were hard to make out as well as the maps. Asks to correct the mistakes and add translations of the place names. Asks about how AwaxElagelis is, if he is has recovered. Asks if the Governor has acted on any of the matters that Boas submitted to him on behalf of the Indians. "The last I had was a courteous letter without any statement as to what he had done."

Description: Received letter of February 9 and 16 and thanks Boas for the gifts, especially the eyeglasses. Glad that Boas talked with Governor and University about condition of Indians. Glad that Boas met Mrs. Cook, though she does not know "a thing about the potlatch" because she hasn't given one. Has not seen AwaxElagElas recently, who broke his hip. Read Boas's letter to Kwagu'ł and Ławitʼsis who send their thanks to Boas for keeping his promise. Tried to translate words Boas sent as well as those of Knight Inlet, which is quite difficult. Sending pages 4898-4912. Dick Price has sent the four house posts.

Description: Has been back home for two weeks. Sent some presents from Vancouver. "I had the opportunity to talk in Vancouver to a few influential people at the University about the condition of the Indians, and in Victoria I had a two hour conference with the Governor about conditions in Alert Bay, the potlatch, coppers, and so on. I am now corresponding with some people in Ottawa in order to find out the right way of going at this matter. I wish you would tell Awaxalagilis and the others that I am keeping my promise." Is interested in finding out "what has become of the language under the influence of English." Met with Mrs. Cook "who is perhaps the best representative of that group. Boas is now translating stories written down at Fort Rupert. Is finding some words that he knew at the time but does not now. Will send them so that Hunt can translate them. All except two or three of "the moving pictures" came out well. Asks to check with the Cadwallers about whether they received the package of pictures and other items.

Gives lengthy, detailed description of sweat baths used for sick people among "Alaska Indians" (Tlingit). Will write about Kwaguʼł version of sweat baths. Says that hunter do leave notes for others on trails. Discusses role of dogs, use of dogs wool. Gives particular dogs' names and their owners and tribes. Will work on question of different meaning and translations of Indian names. Gives lengthy example of the name q!om'xālāgEles. Finished a map of Dzawadi River with locations of olachen traps. Talked with head chief Maxwayaledze of Ma'amtagila for the names of traps, but he could only remember two.

Description: Sending pages 2910-2940 copied from "thumb book" (see letter of 12-30- 1923) with corrections of spelling mistakes, and łendăqw story of the Wuikinuxv, told by Odzestales, who promises to give more Heiltsuk stories. People are away at potlatch given by a young Madiłbe chief who was given a permit to do it. People were happy but the Indian Agent said there would be no more after this. A man came to Fort Rupert to start carving a house for P.E. Goddard.

Hunt translated it in turn into Kwak'wala and English. Sending pages 2866-2882 with the last of the L!asutewales story, and pages 2883- 2894 of guwi story at nulu also told by Odzestales. Thankful for the work. Asks for reminder of what to work on next. Madełbe tribe came today to invite Kwagu'ł to a big potlatch. Indian agent allowed the chief to do this even though others are prohibited.

Description: Received letter of November 14. Read the Nowell story on the copper to "oldest men of Fort Rupert." The men laughed at the story, said it was wrong. Gives extensive story on background of price of the copper and how it inflated through being resold. Gives fuller background story of the copper and its meaning, and relation to his mother. Suggest Boas get the history of the Seattle totem pole to get "all the different storys" of what's on the copper. Hunt was asked to write it out with his mother after they put it up there. Gives detailed story of mother 's coming to Fort Rupert in 1850. Tells another detailed story of another copper made in secret by a Haida man hired by k!âde, and how k!âde sold it in 1873 in Victoria. This copper now owned by a Dzawada̱ʼenux̱w chief. Gives very detailed background on k!âde and his relations. Includes names of 5 signed witnesses who gave this background story. Ends with 2 full-page sketches of each copper, probably sent with letter of December 14.; Contains the image Māmō'gwelēlā
