- Description
- Just found out story of how the copper came to Charles Nowell. Involves a Ławitʼsis potlatch, where a "Nass Indian" (Nisga'a) had 3 coppers for sale. A ʼNa̱mǥis chief took one of the largest ones. A man named Morris had to leave suddenly, but left the smallest one to Nowell to try to resell it, but it was viewed as of poor quality by the Indians. Sending sketches of each. (These found now with letter of December 4.) Explains meanings and names of what is painted on them according to the old men. Some names are Heiltsuk. Describes hostilities between Kitkatla and Fort Rupert between 1851-1871.

- Description
- Received letter of August 23 with list of specimens and manuscript. Mr. Heye will send additional $250 to continue work. Money is for collecting Kwakiutl specimens between "the rivers in that region and Cape Mudge." Mr. Heye is probably ready to send money for West Coast trip. NEnwakawe story agrees with story Boas got in 1886. Gives details. Similar story obtained by Hunt earlier, now in page 418 of "the big book in which I published our texts." Asks who told that earlier version, which differs from Rivers Inlet version. Would like cook book to be finished. Also wants seeds of poisonous plant.

- Section AN1: Hand-annotated map of the southern part of Hecate Strait area, British Columbia, Canada

- Description
- Printed map later hand-annotated by Franz Boas. "Southern Part of Hecate Strait" map published by the U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office, 26th edition, 1918. Hand annotations made by Franz Boas, most likely in or near 1923, when he visited Rivers Inlet. Earlier cataloging of this map incorrectly titled it as a "Linguistic map." Boas's hand annotations in red pen reflect his attempts to understand the territories and associated group names of indigenous peoples of the area. Most of the names he notes are "bands" or nations associated with larger cultural groups, including Tsimshian, Heiltsuk ("Bella Bella"), Nuxalk ("Bella Coola"), Wuikiunuxv ("Ooweekeno"), and Kwakwaka'wakw (specifically Gwa'sala). The map also includes many indigenous place names in red pen or often faint pencil. Left portion of map extending into the Pacific appears to have been torn off.; Item AN1

- Description
- Received letters of May 19th and 29th. Sending pages 4738-4791 "in the old fashion language about ega or medicine killers." Will write about funeral customs next. Will be glad to help Frederica de Laguna, though is concerned she may not make it farther than Port Hardy as there are few people who know about "old fashion" people though his sister who lives there claims to. Not sure that speakers of G̱usgimukw dialect can be found as "they are losing their language," as the Kwagu'ł, Tłatła̱siḵwaḻ a, 'Nak'waxda'xw̱ , and Wuikinuxv tribes "spoilt their language." Has had trouble with his hip for more than a year and needed to use a walking stick, but is feeling better lately. Looking forward to Boas's visit.
