- Table of 102 Indian tribes grouped by languages and place of residence. Gallatin, secretary of the treasury of the United States (1801-14) and diplomat, was originally stimulated toward linguistic research by Alexander von Humboldt. Gallatin's linguistic interest culminated in his Synopsis of the Indian tribes (1836), a work which sought to classify Indian tribes by comparing their languages. In 1842 Gallatin founded the American Ethnological Society, and afterward made both financial and literary contributions toward its Transactions.; Item call number: Pam. v. 1183, no. 16.
