| Abstract | John Melish, born in Scotland and trained as a cotton merchant, began taking notes during his business travels in the United States on the geography, politics, and social life of the areas he visited. When he settled in Philadelphia in 1812, he published a two volume work, Travels in the United States, and soon thereafter began a highly succesful map publication firm. | ||
