Would like to get more old style wood carvings. Item 189 from Tłatła̱siḵwaḻa that was listed did not arrive. Enclosingstatement of account. Pleased with items used for divination. Has more questions about items of this kind, would like more info and specimens. Planning to come to British Columbia next spring. Asks about whether posts bought at Nahwitti last year have been obtained.

Asked a Da̱ʼnaxdaʼxw man about his tribe's berry gardens and women's prayers for the trees, but the man refused, said it is the prayer owner's at Dzawadi. Also at Gwa'yi.

Description: Received letter of September 13. Sending bill for activities in June. Disagrees with Boas's concern of being over-charged. Explains details and reasoning for costs. Refers to Gumkanis yegEtEk gigis #169 from Tłatła̱siḵwaḻa andother house post andneedto persuade or force people to pull down house. Tells of man (who would not give his name) who came to Alert Bay recently buying specimens and claiming that Boas wouldn't be sent out anymore. Heard that Newcombe and Dorsey are coming out to Alert Bay and Nahwitti as well collecting specimens and Hemasilakw said that Dorsey will pay $10 for Hamatsa mask and neck ring. A Mr. Hall from England has also been by recently collecting. Discusses red cedar bark masks. Promises good collection can be obtained from G̱usgimukw. Man who sold stone head said he wanted it back and a better price. Man found it near 'Na̱mǥis lake and said there's another like it at a Da̱'naxda'xw̱ village that is available to buy. Writing now about Tsekami, father of Tisamgut. Wife is very sick with dysentery and brother sick also. Asks Boas to send dysentery medicine like that given by Dr. Hillmantle when in Chicago.

For Mr. Heye, spent 15 days traveling to Rivers Inlet and Smith Inlet (Gwaʼsa̱la), 4 days at X̱wa̱mdasbe' (Tłatła̱siḵwala), and 7 days at HegEms (Gwawaʼenuxw). Lists full expenses. Asks for information on Dr. Newcombe. Discusses photos taken by him of Indians dressed up in the manner of Romans, which Charles Nowell got from Bible stories. Has made invoice collection to be sent for the steamer shipping it and another with Indian names for Boas. Asks how many pages are due for payment to him. Will write to friends at Nootka to see if Newcombe has been there, and find a best time to go.

Description: Received letters of May 19th and 29th. Sending pages 4738-4791 "in the old fashion language about ega or medicine killers." Will write about funeral customs next. Will be glad to help Frederica de Laguna, though is concerned she may not make it farther than Port Hardy as there are few people who know about "old fashion" people though his sister who lives there claims to. Not sure that speakers of G̱usgimukw dialect can be found as "they are losing their language," as the Kwagu'ł, Tłatła̱siḵwaḻ a, 'Nak'waxda'xw̱ , and Wuikinuxv tribes "spoilt their language." Has had trouble with his hip for more than a year and needed to use a walking stick, but is feeling better lately. Looking forward to Boas's visit.
