Received letter of July 12. Did not write much recently as many people have smallpox. Can go to Bella Bella any time. Has only been writing about rules for head chief. Can write down stories at Bella Bella in Heiltsuk.
Sending pages 2910-2940 copied from "thumb book" (see letter of 12-30- 1923) with corrections of spelling mistakes, and łendăqw story of the Wuikinuxv, told by Odzestales, who promises to give more Heiltsuk stories. People are away at potlatch given by a young Madiłbe chief who was given a permit to do it. People were happy but the Indian Agent said there would be no more after this. A man came to Fort Rupert to start carving a house for P.E. Goddard.
Received letter of June 27. Answers question regarding similar phrases meaning "goes into houses" and "vomited in/out of a house." Gives additional corrections on other phrases and sounds. Sending 30 pages. Tells that brother-in-law Dan Wilson recently passed.
Received letter of November 11 and 13. Saddened to hear of Boas' daughter's passing. Brother-in-law D. Wilson also recently passed away, as did sister Mrs. A. S. Spencer. Has not received check mentioned. Will write about the bear shortly and get stories from Odzestales, who would like to be paid for them. Sending sketch of house and half of a front of "the oldest house."
Received letter of January 11. Has been working for Sapir to collect stories on all the coppers that Indians were recently arrested for potlatching with. The "thumb book" is "The Social Organization and Secret Societies of the Kwakiutl Indians." Will write about the Eagles of other tribes. Heiltsuk stories appear to have not been told completely. Versions told by Odzestales have more details, such as star story. Sending pages 2846-2857 of L!asutewales story, and 2858-2865 of star story.
Sending pages 2817-2861 (?) on the story of omaxtā!laLE that is in the "thumb book" (The Social Organization and Secret Societies of the Kwakiutl Indians). Found many mistakes. Wrote down full story recently told by head chief nEgadze of gegElgEm who told this family history in a feast. Doing work for Sapir now that will involve going to "all the tribes to do it rightly."
Received letter of June 2 and parcels. Sending 42 pages in response to previous parcels. Found some mistakes in the vocabulary. Will look over the new lists.
Received letter of February 8 and 12, map sent by Newcombe and small one sent by Mr. Kermode. Odzestales translated the Rivers Inlet story recently. Hunt translated it in turn into Kwak'wala and English. Sending pages 2866-2882 with the last of the L!asutewales story, and pages 2883- 2894 of guwi story at nulu also told by Odzestales. Thankful for the work. Asks for reminder of what to work on next. Madełbe tribe came today to invite Kwagu'ł to a big potlatch. Indian agent allowed the chief to do this even though others are prohibited.
Received three parcels of questions. Sending sheets for words beginning Y and pages 2975-2990 on the sun and sea prayer, and on the beginning of the signing of the cross in 1860. Will begin answering 3 parcels of questions sent on pink paper. Tells of the passing of Johnny MElede (Maled).
Received letter of February 21 and March 31. Sending pages 51-67, ałq!ex story, and pages 3059-3118 of second war of ʼNa̱mǥis against Exwădets!anox, with war song, and another war of ʼNa̱mǥis against "Victoria Indians" with war song. Odzestales is giving stories for free as Hunt did some work for him after his sister died. Working on getting some more difficult words.
