Was sick, had to go up to Rivers Inlet hospital. Will write more soon about Kwagu'ł cooking. Requests Heye's address for sending collection. On way to Rivers Inlet saw Harlan Smith and Mr. Taylor on their way to Alaska. Was going to go to G̱usgimukw before he got sick. Did get photos of tree with bark split from it and salmon cooking.
Sending 65 pages on different kinds of roots and how they are cooked. Has been away to 'Nak'waxda'xw̱ country to look for painted coffin, which he found in a cave. Will send it to Mr. Heye. Still working on getting LE!gwen canoe.
Sending prayer to harpooned whale and 4 waiting songs of whaling crew and 4 towing songs. Obtained from a Gełts!emaht whaler from the West coast last summer. Sent the Heye collection except for the canoe which he couldn't get.
Was sick again and went to a doctor at Cape Scott. Sending 102 pages on clover roots cooking. Trouble with collection for Heye. Asked a Nahwitti man, Mago, to make a canoe, which may have to be paid extra for after Mago drowned. G̱usgimukw dishes that were to be obtained were stolen. However, did obtain masks from same house.
Sending invoice, bill of lading, and list of specimens for Mr. Heye. Heard from Harlan Smith that Boas' replacement would make changes in displays that Hunt disapproves of.
Was at Rivers Inlet learning about birth, marriage, and "how the names scatter to different tribes." Writing now about Tower of "Babylon". Writing about how Fort Rupert married to a Heiltsuk chief's dahghter, how other son and daughter got married to Haisla, and use of names through these marriages (relating to Boas' recent request to write about Fort Rupert individuals' family histories.)
Wrote about Kwagu'ł names and their high eagle seats, about MaxmEwesagEme of Dzawada̱ʼenuxw who married a Heiltsuk woman, son married Mama̱liliḵa̱la, and daughter married Kwexa, and son married 'Na̱mǥis. Discusses how names and seats are given out.
